Security and virus issues

1. Maintain the highest possible security levels by keeping Windows up to date with Microsoft’s security patches:

  • Start by downloading our How to use Windows Update information sheet. This gives you a detailed explanation as to how to use the Windows Update site for Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows 2000 with lots of screen images to help you. Microsoft have just revamped the Windows Update site for Windows XP, so a guide for Windows XP users is under development.

Warning: Because of the detail, this file is quite large, about 437KB, so on a dial-up connection it could take some time to download.

You will need Adobe® Acrobat Reader to view this file. It can be obtained from here.

  • Then click here to visit the relevant page on Microsoft’s web site.

2. Keep your anti-virus software up-to-date:

  • If you have four or less computers then we suggest you use Norton Anti-Virus.
  • If you have five or more machines we recommend the leading anti-virus product: Sophos Anti-Virus. Visit our anti-virus page for more details.

Keep your systems running smoothly

1. Install the latest service packs. You can download either of the two most commonly requested ones via Microsoft’s web site as shown below:

  • Windows 2000 Service Packs are available from here.
  • Windows XP Service Packs are available from here.

Be warned though: these are enormous downloads - often over 100MB. So we supply these to our clients on CD-ROM should they require them. Our clients get this as part of our Support Extra support package.

We advise people NOT to install the service packs as soon as they come out, unless they must have one of the fixes in the pack. Let someone else be the guinea pig! Subscribe to our newsletter and we'll let you know when new service packs come out and when they've been tried and tested.

2. Apply the latest MS Office updates. They are available from Microsoft’s site here
